A superb antique signet ring with lyre intaglio on a sardonyx panel. The band features striking engraved detailing to the shoulders, crafted in 9 karat gold throughout and dating from the Edwardian period, circa 1910.

In Ancient Greece, lyrical poetry - as the name suggests - was accompanied by lyre playing, indeed the word - lyre - is used metaphorically when referencing the skill of a poet, as in Byron's "I wish to tune my quivering lyre / To deeds of fame, and notes of fire". In organology, lyre is defined as a "yoke lute", being a lute in which the strings are attached to a yoke that lies in the same plane as the sound-table and consists of two arms and a cross-bar.
